Adashinonembutsuji Temple(化野念仏寺) was founded by Kukai, who built Gochisan Nyoraiji Temple to mourn the dead.Adashino was one of the big three burial sites in Kyoto, along with Toribeyama and Rendaino.
In the Meiji period (1868-1912), local people collected scattered unrelated Buddhist statues and arranged them as a group of stone statues and pagodas (about 8,000 pieces).
On August 23 and 24, a “Sento Kuyo” (memorial service with 1,000 lanterns) is held to offer offerings by lighting lanterns. In autumn, it is a beautiful place with autumn leaves.
From Adashinonembutsuji, follow the road up the hill to Otagi Nembutsuji Temple, famous for its thousand two hundred arhats.
