Daitokuji Temple(大徳寺) is the head temple of the Daitokuji School of the Rinzai Sect.Emperor Godaigo gave it a special status along with Nanzenji Temple.Later, it declined due to burning during the Onin War.Zen Master Ikkyu rebuilt Daitokuji Temple with the support of Sakai merchants.
The ceiling of the Hatto is decorated with a huge dragon by Kano Tanyu. The sutra repository contains sutra manuscripts dating back 600 years from the Tenpyo period to the Yoshino period.
Daitokuji Temple is a large temple with 23 tatchu(temple on the grounds of a large temple) on its grounds.Of the 23 Tatchu, Dasenin, Kotoin, Zuihoin, and Ryogenin are always open to the public.Sokenin, Korinin, and Oubaiin are open to the public in spring and fall.
Access to Daitokuji Temple from Kyoto Station takes about 35 minutes by bus.
