Kotoin(高桐院) is the Tatchu(temple on the grounds of a large temple) of Daitokuji Temple. The tea house “Shoukouken” is said to be a relocated version of the tea house used for the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587.
Kotoin is a recommended garden, mainly featuring maple trees (kaede), and is especially beautiful during the fall foliage. Matcha (powdered green tea) is also available while viewing the garden.
The lantern (also known as “missing lantern”) treasured by Sen no Rikyu, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi wanted, daringly lacked one-third of the back side and refused Hideyoshi’s request.Later, the lantern was used as the tomb of Tadaoki Hosokawa and his wife, Lady Galasha.
Access to Kotoin from Kyoto Station takes about 34 minutes by bus.
