Shojiji Temple(勝持寺) was founded in 680 by Enno Gyoja at the order of Emperor Temmu.It is also said to be the place where Ashikaga Takauji stopped by on his way to attack Rokuhara, saying that “winning and holding” was a good omen.
In 1140, Satou Norikiyo, a samurai, was ordained and entered Shojiji Temple, where he changed his name to Saigyo.There is a Saigyo cherry tree (the third generation), which is said to have been planted by Saigyo Houshi himself.From the Saigyo cherry blossoms, Shojiji Temple came to be known as the “Temple of Flowers.
Both cherry and maple trees are beautiful here. You can walk from Shojiji Temple to Shoboji Temple via Oharano Shrine.
To get to Shojiji Temple from Kyoto Station, ride from JR Kyoto Station to Mukomachi Station (approx. 8 minutes), from JR Mukomachi Station bus stop to Minamikasuga-cho bus stop (approx. 25 minutes), and walk approx. 20 minutes from the bus stop.
