Genkoan(源光庵) is famous for its “Satori no Mado”(Window of Enlightenment) and “Mayoi no Mado”(Window of Lostness).
The Window of Enlightenment is a round window representing the truth of Buddhism, and the circle represents the macrocosm.The Window of Lostness is a square window symbolizing “human life” and representing the four suffering and eight afflictions of life, aging, sickness, and death.The combination of the window of enlightenment and the autumn leaves is impressive.
Legend has it that a child appeared in a dream at the well of Genkouan and told the people where the spring water was located, thereby saving them from famine. The water in this well has never run dry in any drought.
On the ceiling of the main hall of Genkoan, the floorboards of Fushimi Castle from the time of the suicide of Torii Mototada of the Tokugawa family in 1600 are offered and stretched on the ceiling as “Chitenjo.Footprints on the ceiling.
Access from Kyoto Station to Genkoan takes about 37 minutes by bus (not including transfer time).
