Sokenin

Sokenin(総見院) is the Tatchu(temple on the grounds of a large temple) of Daitokuji Temple. It was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a memorial service for Nobunaga who died in the Honnoji Incident.

Sokenin

Since there were no remains of Nobunaga, two wooden statues of Nobunaga were made, and one of them was cremated at the memorial service.A memorial service is held every year on June 2, the anniversary of Oda Nobunaga’s death.

Sokenin

The tombs of Nobunaga’s family members are located in the Sokenin precincts. The Sokenin Hojo was used for the “Daitokuji Grand Tea Ceremony” held by Hideyoshi. The Wabisuke camellia was given to Hideyoshi by Sen no Rikyu, and is said to be the oldest variety in Japan (about 400 years old).
