Kochidani Amidaji Temple(古知谷阿弥陀寺) was founded by Tanzei Shonin in 1609.Tanzei Shonin traveled to many countries and finally came to Kochidani.
A stone mausoleum is located in a cave next to the main hall, and Tanzei Shonin’s mummy Buddha is enshrined in a sarcophagus. Most of the existing Sokushinbutsu in Japan are located in the Tohoku region, and Tanzei Shonin’s Sokushinbutsu (not open to the public) is considered to be the southernmost one.
Kochidani Amidaji Temple is a beautiful place to view the autumn leaves. In autumn, approximately 300 maple trees, including the 800-year-old Takaoka maple (a natural monument designated by Kyoto City), change color.
Kochidani Amidaji Temple is accessible by public transportation by Kyoto Bus. Take Kyoto Bus No. 19 (Kokusaikaikaikan Eki-mae bus stop ⇒ Kochidani bus stop) after getting off at Kokusaikaikaikan Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway.
The distance from Ohara bus stop, which has many buses, to the temple gate of Kochidani Amidaji Temple is about 2.2 km (about a 25-minute walk).
