Joshokoji Temple(常照皇寺) was founded in 1362 when Emperor Kogon, the first emperor of the Northern Dynasty, visited the area and built a hermitage.Joshokoji Temple belongs to the Tenryuji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.

The precincts of the temple are approximately 12,000 m2 in size. There is also a walking trail that circles the grounds for about 1,000 meters (about a 30-minute walk).

The cherry blossoms are famous for the natural treasure “Kokonoe Sakura“, “Sakon no Sakura“, which is a strain from the Imperial Palace, and “Mikuruma-kaeshi no Sakura Sakura”, which has single and double blossoms at the same time, in front of the Hojo.It is also a beautiful place for autumn leaves.

It takes more than 1 hour and 30 minutes from Kyoto City (Kyoto Station) to Joshokoji Temple by car.To get to Joshokoji Temple from Kyoto Station, take the West Japan JR Bus and the Kyoto-Keihoku Furusato Kosha Bus (get off at Yamagunigoryomae).
