Tenryuji Temple(天龍寺), a World Heritage Site, is the head temple of the Tenryuji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It was originally built by Ashikaga Takauji to mourn the loss of Emperor Godaigo.
Since its foundation, the temple has suffered eight major fires, including the Onin War and the Hamagurimon Incident (the Hamagurimon Incident). The ceiling of the Hatto Hall(special exhibition) is decorated with a 9-meter-diameter dragon with an eight-pointed stare, and the dragon on the ceiling keeps staring at you as you move around the hall.
The garden, the first in Japan to be designated as a Special Historic Site of Scenic Beauty, is a garden with a pond and garden paths that incorporate the Arashiyama and Kameyama mountains into the borrowed scenery. There is a small elevated area in the garden called “Boukyou Hill”.
