Chionin(知恩院) is the head temple of the Jodo sect.It has numerous national treasures and important cultural properties, including Sanmon Gate (the largest gate in Japan), one of the three main gates in Kyoto, Mikageido (national treasure), Sutra Repository (important cultural property), and Karamon Gate (important cultural property).
The large bell is rung only on the occasion of Honen Shonin’s “Goyo-no-Taikai”, “New Year’s Eve Bell Trial Ringing” and “New Year’s Eve Bell Ringing” (admission limited to about 300 people, changeover required).
The Sanmon Gate (National Treasure) is usually closed to the public, but you can go up and see the Buddhist statues during special openings.
To get to Chionin from Kyoto Station, take a 15-minute bus ride and a 5-minute walk from the bus stop. Alternatively, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for a 10-minute ride (not including transfer time) and a 10-minute walk from Higashiyama Station.
