Murinan(無鄰菴) is the villa of Aritomo Yamagata(Japanese samurai (Choshu clan samurai), army soldier and politician. His rank is General of the General Staff of the Army.), which was built in 1896.
The garden was designed and supervised by Aritomo Yamagata himself and built by Jihei Ogawa VII. Higashiyama and is fed by water from the Biwako Sosui Canal.
It is also known as the location of the Murinan Conference, where diplomatic policy was decided just before the start of the Russo-Japanese War. Matcha (powdered green tea) is available for a fee.
To get to Murinan from Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about 12 minutes (not including transfer time), and then walk about 7 minutes from Keage Station.
