Higashi Hongwanji Temple(東本願寺) is the head temple of the Shinshu Otani sect of Jodo Shinshu.Locals call it “Ohigashi-san”.
It is home to the Mikado Gate, one of the three main gates of Kyoto, and the Mieido, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, and inside there is a large hall with a floor space of 927 tatami mats.
On December 20, the annual year-end event of Osusuharai, in which priests and monks sweep away soot and dust from the year, is a well-known event.
A five-minute walk east from Higashi Hongwanji Temple leads to Shoseien, an enclave precinct.It takes about 5 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station to Higashi Honganji Temple.
