Toji Temple(東寺), a World Heritage Site, was built to the east of Rajomon Gate when the capital was moved to Heian-kyo by Emperor Kanmu.Its official name is Kyoo Gokokuji Temple.
The five-story pagoda (national treasure), the longest in Japan (about 55 meters high), was first built in 826, and was later destroyed by fire four times.The present five-story pagoda was built in 1644 by a donation from Tokugawa Iemitsu.
On the 21st of every month (the anniversary of the death of Kobo Daishi Kukai), a fair called “Kobo-san” is held with over a thousand open-air stalls.Especially, “Hatsu Kobo” on January 21 and “Shimai Kobo” on December 21 are crowded with many people.
Access from Kyoto Station to Toji Temple takes about 10 minutes by bus.From Kyoto Station Hachijo West Exit to Toji Keigamon 1.2 km walk, approx. 16 min.
