Unryuin(雲龍院) is a branch temple of Sennyuji Temple.The three Yakushi (Medicine Buddha, Nikko, and Gekko) are the principal deities of the temple.It was first built by Emperor Go-Kogon in 1372.
Unryuin Temple is the oldest sutra copying dojo in Japan, and visitors can still experience sutra copying.The 27th of every month is “Shakyo Day”.On April 27, it is held with monks and Shakyo members. general viewing is suspended on April 27.
You can see the “Satori-no-mado,”(Window of Enlightenment) which represents the state of Zen enlightenment, and the “Mayoi-no-mado,”(Window of Lostness) which represents the suffering of life.There is a painting of a dragon that changes the length of the dragon’s face when viewed from different angles.
To get to Unryuin from Kyoto Station, take the bus for about 11 minutes + Sennyuji-michi bus stop (about 15 minutes walk from the bus stop) or JR train for about 2 minutes + Tofukuji Station (about 20 minutes walk from the station).
