Sennyuji Temple(泉涌寺) got its name from a clear spring that gushed out in one of its precincts.After the death of Emperor Shijo in 1242 and the construction of his tomb, the tombs of successive emperors were also built.Sennyuji Temple is also called “mitera” because it is a family temple of the imperial family.
Just to the right of the main gate at the entrance is Unryuin, the oldest sutra recitation hall in Japan.Yokihikanno-do is popular among women for its blessings for marriage, beauty, and easy delivery.Yokihi was the wife of a Chinese emperor and a beauty of the East along with Leopatra.
Every year on Coming-of-Age Day, Izumiyama Seven Lucky Gods Tour; from March 14 to March 16, Japan’s largest painting of the Nirvana (16 meters long x 8 meters wide) will be open to the public.
To get to Sennyuji Temple from Kyoto Station, take the bus for about 11 minutes and walk about 15 minutes from the Sennyuji-michi bus stop.Or a 20-minute walk from JR Tofukuji Station.
