Eikando Temple

Eikando(永観堂) is the head temple of the Seizan Zenrin School of the Jodo sect. The official name of the temple is “Zenrinji,” which was given by Emperor Seiwa.The “Mikaeri Amida” enshrined in the Amida Hall is a must-see, a very rare standing statue of the Amida Nyorai with its head turned to the left.

Karamon is the imperial gate used by the emperor’s envoys to enter and leave the temple. The envoys are allowed to enter after purifying themselves with heaping sand in front of the gate.

Eikando is one of the most famous places in Kyoto for its autumn foliage, so much so that it is known as “Eikando of maple trees,” and is a place that should not be missed during the fall tourist season.

To get to Eikando from Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about 12 minutes (not including transfer time), then walk about 15 minutes from Keage Station.
