Reikanji Temple(霊鑑寺) is a nun monastery where five imperial princesses and imperial granddaughters served as abbots, and is also known as the “Gosho of the Valley.
The main hall was donated by Ienari Tokugawa in 1795. The garden is an ornamental garden with a pond and Hannya-ji type stone lanterns.
As many as 30 species of camellias are planted here, including Emperor Gomizuo’s beloved “Jikkou Tsubaki” (camellia japonica). Reikanji Temple is usually closed to the public.
To get to Reikanji Temple from Kyoto Station, take a 27-minute bus ride and a 5-minute walk from the Shinnyodo-mae bus stop.
