Honpouji Temple(本法寺) is one of the head temples of Nichiren Shoshu.In 1587, it was moved to its present location by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The Tomoe garden in front of the shoin was created by Honami Koetsu.The garden of ten (tsushinaniwa) is named after the nine stones and the will of the heart (shi).
The Reproduction of the Nirvana of Buddha by Hasegawa Tohaku can be seen in the Treasure House. The painting is one of the three most important Nirvana paintings in Kyoto, measuring 10 meters X 6 meters, and the original is unveiled every year during the spring special exhibition of temple treasures from March 14 to April 15.
Access to Honbo-ji Temple from Kyoto Station is by bus, which takes about 27 minutes.
