Konkai Komyoji Temple(金戒光明寺) is said to have originated when Honen Shonin established a small hermitage. Later, Emperor Go-Kogon bestowed upon the temple the two characters “Kin-Kai” and it became Konkai Komyo-ji Temple.It is locally known as “Kurotani-san”.
Konkai Komyoji Temple is associated with the Aizu Clan; in December 1862, the Aizu Clan led 1,000 clan soldiers to make Konkai Komyoji their headquarters.
Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri) at Konkai Komyoji Temple is one of the three Monju statues in Japan and is said to bring blessings for academic achievement, success in school, and increased wisdom. A stone Buddha with afro hair can be seen on the eastern slope of the temple grounds.
To get to Konkai Komyoji Temple from Kyoto Station, take a 29-minute bus ride and a 10-minute walk from the Okazaki-michi bus stop.
