HeianJingu Shrine(平安神宮) was built to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian.The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Kanmu, the first emperor of Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor of Kyoto.
The shrine pavilion is a five-eighths scale reproduction of Chodoin, the main government building of Heian-kyo.The shrine garden is divided into three sections: Minami-shinen (approximately 1,700 tsubo), Nishi-shinen (approximately 1,500 tsubo), Naka-shinen (approximately 1,300 tsubo), and Higashi-shinen (approximately 5,500 tsubo).
The Setsubun Festival is held on February 3, and the Kyoto Takigi Noh Play, featuring Kyogen and Noh plays, is held from June 1 to June 2.
The Jidai Matsuri, one of the three major festivals in Kyoto, is held on October 22.The Jidai Matsuri procession consists of approximately 2,000 people divided into 20 processions of 8 different eras.
To get to HeianJingu Shrine from Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about 10 minutes (not including transfer time) and walk about 10 minutes from Higashiyama Station. By bus, the ride takes about 26 minutes.
