Ryoanji Temple(龍安寺), a World Heritage Site, is said to have been built by Hosokawa Katsumoto in 1450 after he received a villa belonging to the Daitokuji family.
The famous stone garden is composed of 15 stones divided into 7, 5, and 3, arranged so that all stones are not visible from any angle.It became widely known abroad after Queen Elizabeth of England visited in 1975.
There is a tsukubai, a wooden stand donated by Mitsukuni Mito, inscribed with the Zen saying 「吾唯足知」.
Access to Ryoanji Temple from Kyoto Station takes about 31 minutes by bus.
