Seiryoji Temple

Seiryoji Temple(清凉寺) is also known as Saga Shakado.The principal image of the temple is a standing wooden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha (National Treasure), one of the three Tathagata of Japan.

A standing wooden statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, which was carved and brought back from China, had five organs and six viscera made of silk inside its body.In the precincts of the temple is the graveyard of Lord Minamoto no Toru, who is said to be the model for Hikaru Genji, the hero of the Tale of Genji.

Seiryoji Temple

On March 15, Nirvana and Otaimatsushiki will be held.Saga Dainenbutsu Kyogen (Kyoto’s three major nenbutsu kyogen) will be held at Kyogen-do on the first Sunday, second Saturday, and second Sunday in April.
