Nisonin(二尊院) is so called because it enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha and Amida Nyorai.Its official name is “Ogurasan Nisonkyoin Kadaiji” and it belongs to the Tendai sect of Buddhism.
Within the precincts of the temple are the main gate (Yakuin-mon Gate of Fushimi Castle) donated by Suminokura Ryoi, and the site of “Shiguretei” where Fujiwara no Teika selected one hundred poems for the Hyakunin Isshu.
Ogurayama, from which you can see the whole city of Kyoto. Nisonin is famous for its autumn leaves. The approach leading from the main gate is named “Baba of Autumn Leaves.During the cherry blossom season, visitors can see a rare late-blooming cherry tree called “Nisonin Fugenzo Sakura,” which has 130 petals on each flower.
To get to Nisonin from Kyoto Station, take a 16-minute JR train ride or a 17-minute walk from Saga-Arashiyama Station.
