Rakeshisha(落柿舎) was originally a hermitage built by Matsuo Basho’s student Mukai Kyorai (one of the ten philosophers of haiku poet Shōmon).
The name Rakeshisha comes from the story of a merchant who promised to buy persimmons, but the persimmons fell off overnight.
Rakeshisha, which Matsuo Basho visited in person, declined after the death of Mukai Kyorai and its exact location became unknown. 1770, it was rebuilt in its present location.Haiku writing boxes are set up where visitors can write their haiku on the spot and drop them off.
