Nonomiya Shrine(野宮神社) is said to be the place where the Princess purified herself before going to Ise Shrine as the Emperor’s messenger. In accordance with the legend, the Saigu procession is held on the third Sunday of October every year.
Nonomiya Shrine is especially popular among women and attracts many visitors in search of a good marriage. Many people touch the sacred stone (o-kame-ishi), which is said to grant wishes if one prays and pats it.
Since Nonomiya Shrine was the setting of the Tale of Genji’s “Sakaki”, there are cute amulets with the image of the Tale of Genji.Nearby is a bamboo forest walking trail.
To get to Nonomiya Shrine from Kyoto Station, take the JR train for about 16 minutes, get off at Saga-Arashiyama Station, and walk about 10 minutes.
