The deities of Goou Shrine(護王神社) are Prince Wake-no-Kiyomaro, who advised Emperor Kanmu to move the capital to Heian-kyo, and his sister Wake-Hiromushi-no-Mikoto.

The temple grounds are filled with wild boars because of an ancient legend that 300 wild boars appeared and protected and guided Prince Wake-no-Kiyomaro during his exile.

Goo Shrine is also famous as a guardian deity of the legs and hips, since Prince Wake no Kiyomaro’s atrophied legs were restored.

From Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about a 7-minute ride to Goho-jinja Shrine, or a 6-minute walk from Marutamachi Station.
