Hoshakuji Temple(宝積寺) is a temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and was established by Emperor Shomu. It is commonly called “Takaraderera” because in 723, a dragon god introduced uchiide (goddess Benzaiten) and kozuchi (god Daikokuten) from karado (China). It is a beautiful place with cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall.
It is said that Hideyoshi Hashiba (Hideyoshi Toyotomi) established his headquarters there in 1582 during the Battle of Yamazaki, and a three-story pagoda was built overnight to commemorate his victory.
The Great Yakuwari Tsuina Ceremony (Onikusube), held on the third Saturday of April, is the first Tsuina ceremony in Japan.Legend has it that Issunboshi rode a bowl from Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Osaka to the capital of Kyoto and trained at Hoshakuji Temple.
