Otokunidera Temple(乙訓寺) is a branch temple of Haseji Temple of the Toyoyama school of Shingon Buddhism. In 811, “Koubou Taishi Kukai” returned from Tang Dynasty China and was appointed as a separate head of Otokunidera Temple, where he repaired and built the temple.
In 1695, it was rebuilt with the assistance of Keishoin(Mother of the 5th Shogun, Tsunayoshi Tokugawa).
The Motinoki tree is estimated to be 400-500 years old and about 9 meters tall, and is designated as a natural monument of Nagaokakyo City.
In spring (late April to early May), it is also called “Botan-dera” (temple of peonies) because about 2,000 peony plants bloom. It is also a popular spot in autumn with beautiful autumn foliage.
