Shoryuji Castle was built in 1339 by order of Ashikaga Takauji. In 1571, Fujitaka Hosokawa, under the orders of Nobunaga Oda, rebuilt the castle into a state-of-the-art castle of the time, complete with a main keep. The castle was abandoned in 1633.In 1992, it was opened as Shoryuji Castle Park(勝竜寺城公園) (one of the 100 best historical parks in Japan).
Akechi Mitsuhide, defeated in the Battle of Yamazaki, fled from the north gate of Shoryuji Castle and headed for Sakamoto Castle, but on the way, he was hunted by fallen warriors and ended his life.
