Jizoin(地蔵院) was originally built with Muso Kokushi as its founder. It is also called “Bamboo Temple” because it is surrounded by bamboos.
Under the patronage of the Hosokawa clan, it became a large temple with more than 20 branch temples and fiefdoms in various countries, but declined after it was destroyed by fire during the Onin War.
In the precincts of the temple, there is a garden of sixteen arhats, which represents the practice of the sixteen arhats, and a monument to Lord Yoriyuki Hosokawa. Jizoin is also the temple where Zen Master Ikkyu practiced asceticism in his childhood.
