Katsura Rikyu(桂離宮)(Katsura Imperial Palace) was originally built by Prince Tomohito Hachijo, the first prince of Hachijo Palace, in 1615 as a villa (koshoin) for his family.
Katsura Rikyu has been highly acclaimed overseas and was awarded second place in the American Journal of Japanese Gardening. It is famous for being highly praised by the German architect Bruno Taut. Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco was also impressed by Katsura Rikyu.
Audio guides in English, French, and Chinese are available for rent (free of charge). Katsura Rikyu is one of the recommended tourist attractions for foreigners.There are two ways to visit: advance registration or on the day of the visit.Apply by return postcard, online or in person at the Kyoto Office of the Imperial Household Agency in Kyoto Gyoen.
To apply on the day, numbered tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting around 11:00 a.m. (※Requires identification such as a driver’s license at the time of distribution).Access from Kyoto Station to Katsura Rikyu is by bus, a 20-minute ride.
