Myotokuzan Kegonji is commonly called “Suzumushidera”(鈴虫寺) because of the constant sound of bell bugs throughout the year. There is also Japan’s only happy Jizo (guardian deity of children) wearing straw sandals and square and triangular shaped bamboos.
First, you will be taken to the Shoin where bell bugs are kept, receive tea, tea sweets, and a good luck charm, and listen to a sermon (Suzumushi Seppo) on visiting the temple. Since only as many people as can enter the room can listen to the sermon, there may be a wait time before you can see the temple.
Many people visit the temple to pray to the Kofuku Jizo, which is believed to grant one wish of any kind. It is especially popular among women. When making a wish, they do not forget to give their address!
