Kajuji Temple(勧修寺) is dedicated to the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The pond garden, centering on the 6,000-square-meter Himuro-ike(Pond), is designated by the city of Kyoto as a place of scenic beauty.
During the Heian period (794-1185), ice on “Himuro-ike” was presented to the court on January 2, and the thickness of the ice was used to divine the year’s harvest of the five grains. Many lotus trees grow wild in Himuro Pond, and lotus flowers bloom and are in full bloom from July.
There is a place where visitors can go around the sacred sites by stepping on the 88 sacred stones of Shikoku around the statue of Shugyodaishon (Kukai). There is a 750-year-old “haibyakushin” tree and the “Kajuji lantern” donated by Mitsukuni Mito.
To get to Kajuji Temple from Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about 23 minutes (not including transfer time) and walk about 6 minutes from Ono Station.
