Kompukuji Temple(金福寺) was founded by Jikaku Daishi, who built the temple with a statue of the Sacred Kannon as its principal image.
It is said that Matsuo Basho visited Monk Tesshu and they developed a friendship. Monk Tesshu named the unnamed hermitage “Basho-an”.About 85 years later, Buson Yosa visited the area and rebuilt the dilapidated “Basho-an”.Even today, Kompukuji Temple is known as a sacred place for haiku.
As you enter through the gate, the white sand in front of the main hall is eye-catching, and stone steps lead up to the Basho-an, a well used by the monk Tesshu when he entertained Matsuo Basho. Further up is the grave of Yosa Buson.
Kompukuji Temple is one of the best-known places for viewing the autumn leaves among those in the know. To get to Kompukuji Temple from Kyoto Station, take a 48-minute bus ride.
