Shugakuin Rikyu

Shugakuin Rikyu(修学院離宮) began when Emperor Gomizuo built a detached palace on the Shugakuin site.It is said that Emperor Gomizuo directed the construction of even a single tree or plant in the garden.

Shugakuin Rikyu, with a total area of approximately 545,000 m2, consists of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Rikyu palaces, which are connected by a path lined with pine trees.The tour will take you from Shimo-Rikyu to Naka-Rikyu to Kami-Rikyu in that order.

Audio guides in English, French, and Chinese are available for loan (free of charge).There are two ways to visit the exhibition: advance registration or on the day of the visit. To apply in advance, send a return postcard, apply online, or apply in person at the Kyoto Office of the Imperial Household Agency in the Kyoto Gyoen.

To apply on the day, numbered tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting around 11:00 a.m. (※A form of identification such as a driver’s license is required at the time of distribution).

To get to Shugakuin Rikyu from Kyoto Station, take the bus for about 52 minutes and walk about 15 minutes from the bus stop.
