Konzoji Temple(金蔵寺) is a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. When the capital was moved to Heian-kyo, Emperor Kanmu(The 50th Emperor of Japan) buried sutras in the four directions of the capital to protect the royal castle.
It was destroyed by fire during the Onin War, but was rebuilt thanks to a donation from Keishoin, mother of Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. The tower of Keishoin is located at the back of the shrine.
From the overlook, one can see the entire city of Kyoto and Mt. Hiei in the distance. Hieizan is home to Enryakuji Temple, which was built to guard the devil’s gate of Heian-kyo.
Konzoji Temple is difficult to access because it is located halfway up Mt. Ojio (642 m above sea level). If you go there by car, be careful because some of the roads are narrow. From the nearest bus stop, you must walk up a mountain path for 40 to 50 minut
