Shoboji Temple(正法寺) belongs to the Toji school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The principal image of the temple is Senju Kannon (Goddess of Mercy).
It is also commonly known as “Ishi no tera” (stone temple) because of the 200 tons of huge rocks in its precincts.The “Birds and Animals Stone Garden” (Hosho-en), in which stones in the shapes of elephants, owls, lions, frogs, rabbits, and turtles are arranged with the Higashiyama mountain range in the background, is famous.
You can walk from Shoboji Temple to Shojiji Temple via Oharano Shrine.
To get to Shoboji Temple from Kyoto Station, ride from JR Kyoto Station to Mukomachi Station (approx. 8 minutes), from JR Mukomachi Station bus stop to Minamikasuga-cho bus stop (approx. 25 minutes), and walk approx. 10 minutes from the bus stop.
