Sankoji Temple(三鈷寺) is the head temple of the four sects (Tendai, Shingon, Ritsu, and Jodo) and the head temple of the Nishiyama sect. The fifth temple of the Rakusai Kannon Sacred Site and the twelfth temple of the Nishiyama Kokushi Ruins Sacred Site.
The name “Sankoji Temple” comes from the resemblance of the mountain behind it to a Buddhist implement used in esoteric Buddhism. From the precincts of Sankoji Temple, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Kyoto, including the 36 peaks of Higashiyama, Mt. Hiei, and Kyoto Tower.
It is said that if the weather was fine, one could see as far as Kameyama Castle in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). Tea is available. The best time to visit is during the fall foliage season.
There are three ways to get to Sankoji Temple: 1. walk about 1 minute from the north gate of Yoshiminedera Temple (requires admission fee to Yoshiminedera Temple); 2. climb up from Achizaka (at least 10 minutes walk); 3. go through the parking lot of Yoshiminedera Temple and take a narrow, steep slope (Prefectural Road 208) (not recommended for cars; possible for bikes). Our recommendation is to visit Yoshiminedera Temple and then access via the North Gate.
