Mibudera Temple(壬生寺) was used as a training ground for the Shinsengumi during the closing days of the Tokugawa Shogunate.The Shinsengumi was a military organization of the Edo shogunate that was active in the late Edo period (1603-1868).
There is a bust of Isamu Kondo, the head of the Shinsengumi, a memorial tower for Shinsengumi members, “Mizukake Jizo,” which grants one wish, “Overnight Tenjindo,” which gives wisdom overnight, and “Night Crying Jizo,” which is beneficial for infants to stop crying at night.
The Mibudera Setsubune is a famous three-day Setsubun event held from February 2 to 4, and has a history of about 900 years.On February 2 and 3, you can see Mibu Kyogen (performance is Setsubun) 8 times a day from 1:00 p.m.
The Mibu Grand Nembutsu Kyogen (one of the three major Nembutsu Kyogen plays in Kyoto) is performed for a total of 14 days three times a year in spring, fall, and Setsubun.Access to Mibudera Temple from Kyoto Station is by bus, which takes about 14 minutes.
