Nijo Castle(二条城) includes the grounds (total area of 275,000 square meters), Ninomaru Goten (National Treasure), East Main Gate (Important Cultural Property), and Ninomaru Garden (Special Place of Scenic Beauty).
The castle tower was moved from Fushimi Castle in 1626, but was destroyed by lightning in 1750, and was never rebuilt. Registered as a World Heritage site in 1994.
Nijo Castle appears twice at turning points in Japanese history.The first time was in 1614-1615 when the Tokugawa family destroyed the Toyotomi family.The second time was in 1867 when the Tokugawa family relinquished power.
It is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot with about 360 cherry trees of 45 varieties in full bloom in spring.
From Kyoto Station to Nijo Castle takes about 6 minutes by Kyoto Municipal Subway (not including transfer time).
