Daihikaku Senkoji Temple

Daihikaku Senkoji Temple(大悲閣千光寺) is a Zen Buddhist temple built in 1614 by Suminokura Ryoi(A wealthy merchant in Kyoto during the Warring States period) to mourn the souls of those who died during the construction of the Hozu River.

The temple grounds are decorated with a img-responsiveure of Suminokura Ryoi in vestments, holding an axe and kneeling on one knee, and a statue of Suminokura Ryoi.

Daihikaku Senkoji Temple stands at an elevation of about 100 meters above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the city of Kyoto. You can see the Sagano trolley train, Hozu River cruise boats, Mt. Daimonji from the Gozan Bonfire, Mt. Hiei and the five-story pagoda of Ninnaji Temple.
