Taizoin(退蔵院) is the Tatchu (temple on the grounds of a large temple) of Myoshinji Temple. It was founded in 1404, but was destroyed by fire during the Onin War(Civil War of 1467-1477.).
The Kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden, Motonobu’s Garden, by Motonobu Kano, and the pond garden, Yohko-en, by Kinsaku Nakane, can be seen here.Cherry blossoms in the contrasting “yang garden” and “yin garden” are beautiful.
Japan’s oldest ink and wash painting, Hyoyuzu (National Treasure) by Jyosetsu is famous. The painting is a Zen koan (problem) about how a farmer catches a “catfish” with a gourd. This is a Zen problem.A replica of the gourd and sweetfish painting is displayed in the hojo.
