Manpukuji Temple(萬福寺) is the head temple of the Ōbaku school of Zen Buddhism, founded by Zen master Ingen Ryūki.Ingen Ryūkih is a Chinese monk born in 1592. He introduced Ming Dynasty Zen to Japan.
In 1654, Zen Master Ingen arrived in Japan with 20 disciples from Obakuzan Manpukuji Temple in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China.The precincts of the temple cover an area of more than 41,000 square meters, and the seven halls of the temple are symmetrically located on both sides.
Tennouden is a building unique to the Chinese style, inside of which is enshrined a mappu (an incarnation of Maitreya Bodhisattva).In front of the Saido (dining hall), there is a Kaipan (original wooden fish) that tells the time.
To get to Manpukuji Temple from Kyoto Station, take the JR train for about 25 minutes, get off at Obaku Station, and walk about 5 minutes.
