Ujikami Shrine(宇治上神社), a World Heritage Site, was considered as two shrines and one entity together with Uji Shrine, but they were separated in the Meiji era (1868-1912).
The main hall (national treasure), built in the Heian period (794-1192), is the oldest existing shrine building in Japan.The hall of worship in front of the main shrine is also designated as a national treasure.Kirihara Water is one of the seven famous waters of Uji.
If you go north along the nearby Sawarabi Path, you will find the Yosano Akiko Poem Monument and the Tale of Genji Museum, which is dedicated to the Tale of Genji written by Murasaki Shikibu.Tsuen (established 850 years ago), located at the foot of Uji Bridge, is a tea house that appears in Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel Musashi Miyamoto.
To get to Ujikami Shrine from Kyoto Station, it takes about 17 minutes by JR train, and about 20 minutes on foot from JR Uji Station.
