Byodoin(平等院), a World Heritage site, is said to have been founded in 1052 by Kanpaku Fujiwara no Yorimichi. The principal deity is Amida Nyorai.
It consists of a winged corridor and a tailed corridor extending from left to right centering on the central hall of the Amida Hall, and is called the Phoenix Hall because of its shape resembling a “Hoo”.Hoo is a legendary Chinese bird (Phoenix).
Hoo-do is designed as a 10-yen coin. The Hoo on the roof of the Hoo Hall (repainted gold in 2014) and the temple bell (national treasure) on the bell tower are replicas to prevent damage from air pollution. The original can be seen at the Byodoin Museum Hoshokan.
Byodoin has beautiful cherry blossoms in April and wisteria on the wisteria trellis from the end of April to the beginning of May. Fresh greenery and autumn leaves are also beautiful.
