Koshoji Temple(興聖寺) was originally founded by Dogen in Fukakusa (northern part of Fushimi Ward, Kyoto).
The gate of the temple is located at the top of the “Kotozaka” hill that leads to Koshoji Temple, and on the top of the gate is a temple dedicated to the sixteen arhats. The approach to the temple, called “Kotosaka,” is about 200 meters long and is especially beautiful during the season of autumn leaves.
The standing statue of Saint Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Te-Narai Kannon) has its right foot slightly forward and its thumb in the air. This represents his intention to immediately come to the aid of sentient beings in order to relieve their suffering.Koshoji Temple main hall (hatto) ceiling is covered with a blood ceiling from the remains of Fushimi Castle.
To get to Koshoji Temple, it is about a 15-minute walk from Keihan Railway Uji Station or about a 25-minute walk from JR Uji Station.
