Sudo Shrine(崇道神社) is dedicated to Prince Sawara.Prince Sawara was a ringleader in the assassination of Fujiwara Tanetsugu (responsible for the construction of Nagaokakyo) and was exiled to Awaji, where he died after fasting and pleading his innocence.
Thereafter, an epidemic of bad luck broke out in Kyoto, and it was feared that Prince Sawara was possessed by the evil spirit. To appease the grudge, Emperor Kanmu bestowed upon Prince Hayara the additional title of “Emperor Sodo.
On the grounds of Sodo Shrine is Ono Shrine, dedicated to Ono no Imoko, or Emishi, a government official of the Asuka period.From the grave of Ono Emishi, a gilt bronze Ono Emishi gravestone (national treasure) was discovered and is preserved in the Kyoto National Museum.
Access from Kyoto Station to Sudo Shrine takes about 52 minutes by bus.
