Daigoji Temple

Daigoji Temple(醍醐寺), a World Heritage Site, is the head temple of the Daigo school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism.In 907, it became an imperial temple for Emperor Daigo. The temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin War, but was rebuilt with donations from Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Daigoji Temple is widely divided into two sections, Shimo-Daigo and Kami-Daigo. It takes about one hour from Shimo-Daigo to Kaisando at the top of Kami-Daigo.The 38-meter-high five-story pagoda is the oldest wooden structure in Kyoto City.

On February 23, “Godai Riki-san” will be held.Lifting a large rice cake weighing 150 kg for men and 90 kg for women.In 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a cherry blossom viewing party at Daigoji Temple.On the second Sunday of April, “Ho-Taiko Hanami Gyoretsu (Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s cherry blossom viewing parade)” is held.Daigoji Temple is one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto.

To get to Daigoji Temple from Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway for about 26 minutes (not including transfer time) and walk about 13 minutes from Daigo Station.
