Rokuoin(鹿王院) was originally built in 1380 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who dreamed that he could prolong his life if he built a temple here, as the Tatchu (temple on the grounds of a large temple) of Daifukuden Hodoji.Hodoji was destroyed by fire during the Onin War, but only Rokuoin remained.
The name Rokuoin comes from the wild deer that appeared in herds. There is a garden centering on the Shariden with a borrowed view of Arashiyama.
Rokuoin is a very quiet place and a great spot in the Arashiyama area.Shukubo (women only), where the general public can stay, have been established.Shukubo are lodging facilities at temples.
